2018 Elections: the Work Starts Now

This week we celebrate one year since America elected Donald Trump President of the United States. Happy Anniversary.

Well, you can do something about it, because it’s also one year until Americans go to the polls again—not to elect a President, but for an election that could have just as much impact. There Can Be No Compromise

“I have the feeling that we let our consciences realize too late the need of standing up against something that we knew was wrong. We have therefore had to avenge it—but we did nothing to prevent it. I hope that in the future, we are going to remember that there can be no compromise at any point with the things that we know are wrong. . . . .”

Eleanor Roosevelt’s words upon returning home after a visit to a displaced persons camp following the end of World War 2 serve today as a warning and a reminder. We must summon the courage do what we know is right.

“Do what you feel in your heat to be right –for you’ll be criticized anyway. You’ll be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.”

The longest serving First Lady in US history, Eleanor Roosevelt was a prominent advocate for women and for human rights.

She was a strong proponent of her husband’s administration’s efforts to create programs that kept Americans working, optimistic and united during the dark years of the Depression and World War II.

In 1945, she was appointed to serve as a US delegate to the UN and chaired the committee that drafted and approved the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She also co-founded Freedom House in the 1940s and founded the UN Association of the US in 1943 to advance support for the UN’s formation. She is one of the most respected women in modern history.

Eleanor Roosevelt was born on October 11, 1884.

Eyes on the Prize: Focus On 2018 and Stop Fixating on Third Parties

Oh my god people. Stop talking about a third party. Stop talking about the Greens. Stop talking about Bernie. Just stop.

Every time the subject of voting comes up, it’s all I hear: “Democrats are terrible. We need a third party.”

Everything you say is completely reasonable: that we can’t just sit around and wait for another party to come and save us; that we have to start now to build one; that it will take hard work and time; and that if we don’t start now, when?

It’s all true. But you know what? It doesn’t matter. Not at this point. Right now, we have a job to do. Focusing all your energy on building a third party for the 2020 election completely misses the point.

A Battle Plan for 2018

Since the day Donald Trump was elected I have lurched wildly between feelings of frustration, heartbreak, dismay, fear, sadness, and depression. I spend too much time every day reading news coverage of his outrageous acts, devouring analysis, searching for optimism. And I spend far too much time lost in the insane comments on news articles and social media posts hoping for explanations and rationality that will help me make sense of why we handed over our country to a man who is completely un-equipped to handle the enormity of the task.Continue reading “A Battle Plan for 2018”
